Cultural Outreach
In this section you will find two essays, one in Spanish and one in English, describing my cultural learning experience during my time attending Clemson.
El aprendizaje cultural es una parte fundamental de la experiencia universitaria, especialmente en un entorno diverso como el de la Universidad de Clemson. Durante mi tempo en la universidad, he tenido la oportunidad de sumergirme en la rica y variada cultura latina que enriquece la comunidad, tanto dentro como fuera del alumnado. Este ensayo explora las diferencias culturales que he descubierto y aprendido durante mi tiempo en Clemson, destacando cómo estas experiencias han ampliado mi comprensión del mundo.
La comunidad latina en el área de Clemson-Greenville es un mosaico de diferentes orígenes culturales. Desde México hasta Argentina, cada país aporta su propia riqueza y singularidad a la zona. Este crisol de diversidad cultural me ha permitido apreciar las diferentes tradiciones, dialectos y costumbres presentes en la comunidad.
Algunas de las tradiciones que encontré al interactuar con la comunidad de habla hispana incluyen géneros musicales, arte y arquitectura, e ideales de larga data. Por ejemplo, la idea del familismo es un valor común de las familias latinas, y es la perspectiva que la familia es la más importante en la vida. Además, yo aprendí de las festividades de ciertos países, como el Día de los Muertos, o la Semana Santa.
Del dialecto, durante mi tiempo en una clase de traducción yo aprendí muchas formas diferentes de decir la palabra “maíz” de diferentes dialectos. También, yo descubrí que ciertas frases que existen en inglés no existen en español, y viceversa. Estos conceptos gramaticales se encuentran en ambos idiomas, pero español parece tener más diferencias en los dialectos regionales que inglés, que yo sepa.
Aparte de las diferencias en la cultura, una cosa que también he notado dentro de la comunidad hispana es la importancia de la comunidad. Es obvio que los hispanohablantes valoran su comunidad local y quieren cuidarse unos a otros en momentos de necesidad. Encuentro esto admirable y deseo que lo vea más a menudo en mi comunidad local.
Estoy agradecido para las lecciones que yo aprendí durante mis clases y con mi implicación de la comunidad. Espero aprender más a medida que pase el tiempo y poder ayudar a quienes me necesitan.
Cultural learning is a fundamental part of the university experience, especially in a diverse environment like that of Clemson University. During my time at the university, I had the opportunity to submerge myself in the rich and varied Latino culture that enriches the community, both inside and outside of the student body. This essay will explore the cultural differences I have learned and discovered during my time at Clemson, highlighting how these experiences have broadened my understanding of the world.
The Latino community in the Clemson-Greenville area is a mosaic of different cultural backgrounds. From Mexico to Argentina, each country brings its own uniqueness to the area. This melting pot of cultural diversity has allowed me to appreciate the different traditions, dialects and customs present in the community.
Some of the traditions that I have encountered while interacting with the Spanish-speaking community include Music genres, art and architecture, and long-held ideals. For example, the idea of familism is a common value amongst Latino families, and it is the belief that family is the most important thing in life. Furthermore, I learned of festivities and holidays from certain countries, such as Day of the Dead, or Holy Week.
In concerns to dialect, during my time in a translation class I learned many ways to say the word “Corn” in different dialects. Also, I found out that certain phrases that exist in English don’t exist in Spanish and vice versa. These grammatical concepts can be found in both languages, but Spanish seems to have more differentiations in regional dialects than English, as it seems to me.
Apart from the differences in culture, one thing that I have also noticed within the Hispanic community is the importance of community. It’s obvious that Spanish Speakers value their local community and want to take care of each other in times of need. I find this admirable and wish I would see it more often in my local community.
I’m thankful for the lessons that I learned during my classes and while I was involved with the local community. I hope to learn more with the passage of time, and to be able to help those who need me.
